Senior Technician Seabirds

Senior Technician Seabirds
Seabird research constitutes a large part of the activity in NINA and is mainly linked to the SEAPOP (www.seapop.no) and SEATRACK (www.seatrack.net) programs. Both of these programs are carried out in close collaboration with the Norwegian Polar Institute. The work includes monitoring and research on seabirds and human-made challenges such as fisheries, climate and offshore wind development and mapping of distribution and area use. The position advertised is linked to the SEATRACK program, where you as a technician assist with tracking 16 seabird species from approximately 80 different colonies, in collaboration with researchers from 16 countries.

NINA's office in Trondheim has 203 employees and is composed of aquatic and terrestrial research areas belonging to the research areas Water and Natural Diversity (84 employees) and Land and Natural Diversity (87 employees). The position is linked to the research group Birds and Renewables which has 23 employees, consisting of 20 scientists and 3 technicians. The research group consists of a broad group of international researchers who mainly work with birds, including seabirds, and wind power on land and at sea.

NINA's office in Tromsø has 37 employees who primarily work with ecology and environmental research in the high north. The Tromsø office is part of FRAM - High North Research Centre for Climate and the Environment. The position is linked to the research group working on seabirds.

The current technician will be moving to other tasks in NINA and we are therefore looking for a person who can take over his tasks. The position, which is permanent, is located at NINA's office in Trondheim or Tromsø. The person appointed will work with tasks related to the operation of SEATRACK. We are looking for a person who is structured and tidy and who is good at planning and carrying out tasks in hectic periods.

Job responsibilities include:
• Processing and maintenance of large datasets
• Processing of tracking data
• Data processing after fieldwork. This includes downloading and sorting data, post-processing of tracking data, updating database, and creating maps
• Planning, ordering, coordinating, and distributing field materials to field teams.
• Contribute to writing reports, scientific publications, organizing workshops, following up on users of SEATRACK data, and maintaining websites.
• Possibility for some fieldwork

We are looking for someone who has:
• Master's degree in a relevant field
• Experience with R, SQL/database work
• Experience with handling large and complex datasets
• Experience with processing tracking data
• Knowledge and experience with organizing and coordinating projects and fieldwork
• Good Scandinavian language skills, both spoken and written, are an advantage, in addition to good English skills, both spoken and written
• Good collaboration skills, problem-solving skills and ability to work in a structured and independent manner

Other desired qualifications:
• Experience with reporting research results nationally and internationally
• Experience with GIS and spatial analysis
• Analytical background and experience with quantitative ecology
• Knowledge and experience with conducting fieldwork
